Experiment
Come up with the solutions and validate.
The experimenting phase is the heart of the Novum Innovation Method. The solution is devised and then validated.
In this phase it is important not only to be creative, but also to ensure that the solution fits the organization. Involve those involved in the process and, if possible, make them co-owners of the idea. This strengthens the innovation process.
You then design experiments to validate the solution idea for desirability, feasibility and impact.
This phase can be executed as a design sprint.
Important questions are: what is the solution and is it desirable, feasible and impactful?
Checklist
- The end user finds the solution desirable.
- The solution is feasible.
- The solution offers sufficient impact for both the organization and the end user.
- The relevant stakeholders are involved in the development and implementation of the solution.
What happens in this phase
This phase, experimenting, is the heart of the Novum Innovation Method. Here solutions are devised and then validated.
At this stage it is not only important to be creative, but also to ensure that the solution fits the context. This must take into account the location in the organization where the solution will ultimately be used. It is essential to involve the people involved in the process and, if possible, make them co-owners of the idea. This strengthens the innovation process. You then need to design experiments to validate the solution for desirability, feasibility and impact. This phase can be executed as a design sprint.
Important questions that need to be answered in this phase are: what is the solution and is it desirable, feasible and impactful?
Tips
- Don't just rely on a single double diamond, such as a designer print.
- Don't hesitate to do multiple iterations of creating and experimenting. Growing and learning step by step provides a solid foundation.
- To clarify the difference, identify the two parts of this phase: creativity and the discipline of the research process.
- Organize two leaders: one for the reactive part and one for the research part. It is complex for one person to lead both well.
- The direction of the research can be user research (do they want it), function research (does it work) and management research (can the organization do it).
